City by city

What each city is good at, the mind map of who does what, and the gaps founders still hit.

Louisville

84 local orgs134 incl. state & regional6 gaps

Strong at seed stage and in healthcare and aging tech, backed by Humana, the health systems and a growing CPG scene. Support thins out after the seed round.

Good at: Health and aging tech, seed funds, CPG. Biggest gap: Growth-stage capital.

From a reportVenture & PE funds

Growth-stage capital

Local funds can now fully fund a seed round, but investors here reportedly want $500K+ ARR before a Series A (Ellty: Louisville investors funding startups in 2026). Chrysalis is the one sizeable local growth fund. The Metro plan also names limited debt and mezzanine financing (Louisville Metro economic development plan, Dec 2023 (PDF)).

What would fix it: A Louisville Series A co-investment vehicle that partners with Midwest lead investors, plus revenue-based financing for companies between seed and Series A.

From a reportAdvising & services

No single front door

The city's plan says many resources exist but the systems connecting founders to them are "disjointed" (Louisville Metro economic development plan, Dec 2023 (PDF)). The directory lists 129 organisations and no shared intake.

What would fix it: One intake and referral system shared by the major support organisations, similar to Cincinnati's Digital Front Door, with follow-up on each founder.

From this mapIndustry & corporate

Corporate pilots beyond health

Healthcare has a strong pilot pipeline through XLerateHealth and the Healthcare CEO Council (Startup Louisville: accelerators and incubators). Logistics (UPS Worldport) and manufacturing (Ford, GE Appliances) have no equivalent program in the directory.

What would fix it: A logistics and advanced-manufacturing pilot program with UPS, Ford and GE Appliances, modelled on XLerateHealth's health-system introductions.

From this mapUniversity & youth

Deep-tech lab space

The directory lists makerspaces and coworking but no shared wet lab or venture-grade hardware facility in Louisville (Startup Louisville ecosystem directory). Lexington (ASTeCC) and Cincinnati (1819 Innovation Hub) both have one.

What would fix it: Shared lab and prototyping space near UofL's Health Sciences Center, paired with a spinout fund for faculty inventions.

From a reportCommunity & space

Talent and founder density

Louisville had the second-lowest startup business employment among peer cities, 2017–2022 (Louisville Metro economic development plan, Dec 2023 (PDF)). Keyhorse and Render both push founders to be based in, or move to, Louisville (Ellty: Louisville investors funding startups in 2026).

What would fix it: Startup internships and co-op placements with UofL Speed School, plus relocation incentives for experienced operators, not only founders.

From a reportInclusive support

Capital equity gap

Only 2.4% of employer businesses in Louisville are Black-owned; the city is 23.4% Black (Louisville Metro economic development plan, Dec 2023 (PDF)). Most inclusive programs here offer training and incubation, not investment.

What would fix it: A dedicated pre-seed fund, or a set-aside in existing funds, tied to graduates of GEDDI, Power to Prosper and the NIA Center, plus the loan guarantees the city plan recommends.

Founder guides

Short answers to the questions people actually ask. Open one.

Guide 01

If you're raising your first $250K in Kentucky

Read itClose
  1. Check the Keyhorse Capital cycle. It runs quarterly and needs a Kentucky presence.
  2. Pitch the angel groups: Invest Blue, Bluegrass Angels and the Awesome Fund ($50K–$250K checks).
  3. Tell every Kentucky angel about the 40% angel tax credit. It makes your round cheaper for them.
  4. Stack non-dilutive money: SBIR/STTR plus the KY match, the Vogt Awards and 5 Across prize money.
  5. In Louisville or Southern Indiana, talk to Render Capital early.
Guide 02

Starting a company out of UofL, UK or UC

Read itClose
  1. UofL: start with LaunchIt (10 weeks of customer discovery), then the Office of Research & Innovation for licensing.
  2. UK: Launch Blue runs a pre-seed accelerator and labs; ASTeCC has incubator lab space.
  3. UC: the Venture Lab at the 1819 Innovation Hub has a pre-accelerator and an 8-week accelerator.
  4. NKU: the INKUBATOR is a 12-week accelerator for students and alumni.
Guide 03

The events actually worth the drive

Read itClose
  1. StartupCincy Week, Oct 5–8: 100+ sessions, the biggest week in the corridor.
  2. Startup Week Louisville, Nov 16–20, with Friday across the river in Southern Indiana.
  3. 5 Across Finals, Dec 2 in Lexington: up to $55K on the line.
Guide 04

Where to get help, and a desk, for free

Read itClose
  1. Cincinnati's Ecosystem Passport gets you into eight coworking spaces for free.
  2. The Lexington Public Library has free business databases and workshops.
  3. Free advising: Louisville SBDC, Lexington SBDC, SCORE Louisville and SCORE Cincinnati.
Guide 05

Building a physical product in the corridor

Read itClose
  1. Test food products in Chef Space's shared commercial kitchen (Louisville).
  2. Consumer brands: The Brandery, H Venture Partners and P&G Ventures in Cincinnati.
  3. Hardware and appliances: FirstBuild's micro-factory. Spirits: Moonshine University.
  4. Before paying for a production run, pressure-test the decision with Vantage.

Before you put $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000 into a physical product, pressure-test the decision.

Inventory is expensive. So is backing the wrong concept, price, message or customer.

Vantage helps physical-product founders figure out what is worth backing before the money is committed.

Start with the idea, your target customer, your category and whatever you already know.

1

Shape the concept

Turn a rough idea into something clear enough to test. Compare different:

ConceptsCustomersClaimsPositioningPrice points

See which directions look stronger before you pay to manufacture one.

2

Put it in front of actual customers

When the decision needs more evidence, Vantage can test the strongest concepts with people in your target market.

Instead of only asking, “Do people like this?”, answer the questions that affect the launch:

  • Which concept performs better?
  • At what price?
  • For which customer?
  • What gets in the way of purchase?
3

Look past what people say

A concept can get 60% purchase intent and still fail on the shelf.

Vantage looks at that response alongside price, competition, habits and existing alternatives.

The useful question is not whether 60% sounds good. It is what that 60% should make you do next.

4

Make the call

ProceedRefineTestPauseStop

See what the evidence supports, which assumptions still matter and where the next dollar is worth spending.

How much are you about to put behind this product?

Know something we're missing?

An event, a grant, a new coworking space, or a correction. Post it and it goes to Shalin@VantageCPG.com for a check before it appears on the board.

Why this exists

Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati each have plenty of help for founders, spread across hundreds of websites. This board puts the three cities in one place and says plainly what each thing is, where it is and whether it's open.

How items are picked

Organisations come from Startup Louisville's directory, StartupCincy's resource hub, Greater LEX, KY Innovation and the universities. Events are only listed once we've found them on the organiser's own page. Gaps marked “from this map” are our reading of what's missing, not a published finding.
